Lovelines – Edition 1

These abstract gestures of affection are often shaped from a single piece of wire, each figure revealing its own character, a posture, a pose, always with a touch of humour and joie de vivre. Over the years, I have made them for my beloved partner Nina, for birthdays and Valentine’s Days.

Enamour, Glee and Twined

Like the Offcut Animals, Lovelines were created in the moment, thinking with my hands, a kind of three-dimensional doodling. Paul Klee famously said, “A line is a dot that went for a walk”. In these pieces, the line wanders through space, curling and twisting into figures that dance with affection and joy.

These three characters can stand alone, yet speak to one another when placed together. As with our Stone Animals book, we enjoy that everyone reads them differently and forms their own narrative.

To us, the first seems lovestruck and bashful — we call it Enamour. The second lifts its leg mid-gesture, animated with excitement — we call it Glee. The third curves and loops upon itself, intertwined like birds of a feather — we call it Twined.
